Guidelines for Entries

The Taco Kuiper Award for Investigative Journalism recognises outstanding examples of journalism, that reveal untold stories, hold the powerful to account and question those in public life.

The top prize is R200 000 and the runner-up wins R100 000

The Award is open to journalists and broadcasters (which includes online and photography) for stories about South Africa. The call for entries for the 2017 Taco Kuiper Awards is NOW OPEN, inviting you to submit stories published or broadcast in 2017

It is important that each entry be complete and meet the requirements outlined below, or they may be excluded.

Guidelines for Taco Kuiper Awards

A call for submissions is made every January on these pages and in the national press.

The Award recognises the best exemplar of investigative reporting in South African in the previous calendar year.  The Award can be made to a journalist or team of journalists. It can be for a single story or a series of up to six stories published or broadcast in the previous year (please do not include pieces from previous years, though where relevant they can be referred to in your motivation).

Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges who have the discretion to set and use criteria they consider to be appropriate and reasonable.

Entries

No publication or broadcaster can submit more than three entries from their staff.   No individual journalist may be part of more than two entries. Any individual or organisation may make a nomination.

SEVEN hard copies of each entry must be delivered to:

This must be received by 2pm on Friday, February 2.

How to submit an entry:

Print Entry

Entry packs are couriered to the judges for adjudication. Kindly submit entries bound or in a loose-leaf folder, but not glued onto paper or card mountings, and no fold-out material to be included.

Each entry pack must include the following:

  • Completed copy of the entry form | click here to download
  • Print copies of the story/stories as published.
  • The biography (200 words) of each journalist.

A short motivation for the entry (maximum 500 words), including any background the judges should be aware of, an indication of the impact of the story and details of any significant challenge to the accuracy or fairness of the entry such as published letters, corrections, retractions, formal complaints or continuing court cases.

An electronic headshot of each journalist must be emailed to tacokuiper2018@gmail.com or saved to USB or disc and delivered with the pack)

An electronic copy including the original published material, cover sheet, motivation letter, biography, photo and publication logo to be emailed at the same time to tacokuiper2018@gmail.com.

Publications not in English must be accompanied by an English translation or transcript.

If the original is reduced in size it must be accompanied by a readable word document version.

All entries must be received by Wits Journalism by 14H00 on Friday, 2nd February 2018.  No late entries will be accepted.

Broadcast Entry

Entry packs are couriered to the judges for adjudication. Kindly submit entries of the programme/s as broadcast on CD or DVD. The programme title and transmission date must be clearly written on all the discs. The programme title, transmission date, broadcast station and journalists’ names must be clearly written on the disc or disc cover.

 Each entry pack must include the following:

  • Seven copies of the entry form | click here to download
  • Seven copies of the CD or DVD as broadcast.
  • Seven copies of the biography (200 words) of each journalist.

Use of the material

The organisers retain the right to use any material in the winning entry/ies for publicity and promotional purposes relating to the awards, providing full credit is given to the individuals and media involved.
