Nigerian journalist says businessman threatened her over investigative report
Nigerian authorities should investigate claims that a businessman threatened freelance journalist Augustina Armstrong-Ogbonna over her investigation into his company, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.
Armstrong-Ogbonna, who won the 2015 United Nations Foundation Prize for humanitarian coverage, said she was threatened by Emmanuel Iheanacho, a former interior minister, while investigating allegations that his company, Integrated Oil and Gas, was dredging around Irede community in the commercial capital, Lagos, without government approval and without an environmental impact assessment, according to news reports. Iheanacho denied the allegations about his company to CPJ.

BBC launches second BBC World News Komla Dumor Award
For the second year running, the award honours presenter Komla Dumor, who passed away two years ago, aged 41. Komla was an exceptional Ghanaian broadcaster who in his short life made an extraordinary impact – in Ghana, in Africa and across the world – on Joy FM and at the BBC. Through his tenacious journalism and compelling storytelling, he worked tirelessly to bring a more sophisticated African narrative to the world. The BBC is committed to continuing Komla’s legacy.
Following the success of last year’s award, and winner Nancy Kacungira of KTN in Kenya spending three months gaining skills and experience at the BBC headquarters in New Broadcasting House in London, BBC World News continues to invest in finding young talent from Africa to tell African stories to global audiences.

SANEF media statement on meeting with the Economic Freedom Fighters
A delegation led by the Chairperson of Sanef, Mpumelelo Mkhabela, met with the leadership of the EFF at the latter’s office on Monday February 22,2016. The meeting followed a request from Sanef to discuss the party’s decision to bar media workers from Gupta family owned media outlets from EFF functions.
Sanef indicated that the EFF decision was in its opinion a violation of the constitutional protection of journalists to do their work without let or hindrance and asked the EFF to explain how they justified the alleged violation of the Constitution. Sanef also repeated its call to the EFF leadership to allow journalists to go about their work unhindered and without the threat of violence which we continue to condemn.

Free the Word! at the Orbit
The event will seek to discuss how literary translation is only open to cultures that enjoy a written language and have produced written works, that is, cultures with readers who are able to read these works in their own tongue. The panelists will explore how literary translation reveals conflicts of identity, latent or otherwise; and how literary translation represents the opposite moment of cultural assimilation or even the obliteration of identities.
We will try to raise awareness about how literature can promote the voices of those who are suppressed or silenced and promote an open dialogue between cultures. Keorapetse Kgositsile was born in 1938 in South Africa, and was a founding member of the African National Congress Department of Education and Department of Arts and Cultur
