Block release courses offered June/July


Television and Video Journalism

13 – 24 June 2016
This practical course offers print, online and radio journalists key tools to conceive and produce video journalism for broadcast or online.


Radio Journalism

13 – 24 June 2016
The course will introduce participants to the techniques of reporting for this rich and fast-paced medium in a range of formats.


Online Journalism
27 June – 8 July 2016
Aimed at anyone wanting to expand their existing journalism skills and knowledge to digital and social platforms. Learn a rich range of new storytools!


Photojournalism
30 May – 10 June 2016
Engage with the theory and practical aspects of camera, lightroom and the main genres of photojournalism.


Introduction to Financial Journalism

30 May – 10 June 2016
The basics of financial journalism, or writing finance for non-financial journalists.
11 July – 17 October 2016: Semester Courses (Weekly Seminars)

Financial Journalism

For those who want to specialise or any journalist who wants to conquer the language of business and finance.

Feature Writing

A fun opportunity to write longer form. Flexible areas of interest include arts and culture, travel, health, science and environment. Discuss and practice good writing with colleagues and experienced writers.

Creative writing for Journalists

This is a writing workshop that shows you how to combine the techniques of fiction with the rigour of journalistic reporting. It explores various genres of non-fiction, including reportage, the personal essay, travel writing, humour, the interview and the profile

All block release courses require at least two year’s journalism experience and run full-time for 2-weeks. Each certificate course costs R6 000.

Classes combine practical and theoretical work and are all led by experienced professionals.

Development Communication Programme

This programme targets communicators from all sectors. It questions the chasm between development communicators and the mass media, investigating new ways for interacting with journalists, as well as utilising social media, speeches and publications to directly involve people in development initiatives Each

The Conversation Africa celebrates is 1st birthday

A year ago on May 7 the Conversation Africa website went live to deliver commentary and analysis written by academics and edited by professional journalists. This collaborative venture provides the public with access to new information about cutting-edge research that previously would have remained locked in the academy.

The website, which is updated daily, offers a bumper supply of high-quality, reliable and ethical journalism aimed at the general public and also available for reuse by the media. Since launch, The Conversation Africa has featured 1041 articles written by 880 academics from 197 institutions. Over 90% of the website’s articles have been republished by 70 media outlets, reaching an audience of more than 9.2 million.

Al Jazeera-Encounters Pitching Forum for African filmmakers

The Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, in partnership with Al Jazeera, is calling African filmmakers to submit proposals for the Al Jazeera-Encounters Pitching Forum taking place in Johannesburg on Saturday, 11 June 2016. The deadline is this Friday, 27 May 2016.

A maximum of 12 African filmmakers will be selected to pitch to Aloke Devichand, a senior commissioning producer in the documentaries department at Al Jazeera English.
