Andre Meyerowitz (62), senior assistant editor at the Pretoria News, has died. Meyerowitz passed away early Tuesday following surgery, reports Pretoria NewsÂÂÂ
Zingisa Mkhuma, acting editor of the Pretoria News, said Meyerowitz's death was a huge loss to the newspaper.
"He was an asset. His vast knowledge and experience benefited the newspaper," she said.
Meyerowitz, a former parliamentary and foreign correspondent, was serving as night editor at the time of his death.
Friends and colleagues who had worked closely with him at the Pretoria News for many years were shocked to hear of his death and gathered at the Pretoria News offices today.
Messages of condolences were being received from around the country.
The South African National Editors Forum was deeply saddened at Meyerowitz's death, Sanef chairman, Jovial Rantao said.
Independent Newsapers executive director operations Nazeem Howa said it was a very sad day for everyone at the Pretoria News and Independent Newspapers.
"Andre was a valued member of our staff who played a critical role in ensuring our market-leading position in Pretoria," he said.
"Both personally and professionally, Andre's death will leave a major vacuum in all of our lives.
"Our hearts go out to Andre's family for their sad loss."
Meyerowitz is survived by his wife Sue and son Mark.
