The timely intervention of the Ekiti State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ibe
Aghanya saved 15 journalists from being lynched by a mob at
Efon Alaaye during the bye-election in the area, according to a report in the Daily Champion.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that election into the two state constituencies of Ekiti West II and Efon Alaaye were cancelled by INEC two weeks ago as a result of irregularities.
Trouble started when the journalists who were monitoring the polls stumbled on some polling stations where some malpractices were being perpetrated.
Attempts by the newsmen to question the sharp practices irked party loyalists who swooped on them.
"But for the quick intervention of the Police Commissioner and God, we would have been killed by the mob" a journalist who preferred anonymity told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Efon Alaaye.
Addressing the journalists, the Police boss promised that allegations of threats to their lives would be investigated.
Aghanya urged them to continue to discharge their lawful duties as journalists, assuring them of security.
