Professor Abiodun Salawu holds a PhD in Communication of the University of Ibadan, PGD and MSc in Mass Communication of the University of Lagos, and a B.A (Hons) English Studies of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife.

Prior to his coming to South Africa, he had taught journalism and media studies in various institutions in Nigeria, including The Polytechnic, Ibadan; University of Lagos and Ajayi Crowther University.

His major areas of research interest include indigenous language media, development communication, critical studies and new media. He has to his credit numerous journal articles and book chapters.

He edited the book of readings, Indigenous Language Media in Africa (2006). He reviews for several and serves on the editorial/advisory boards of a number of journals which include Journal of African Media Studies, Journal of Media and Communication, and International Journal of Broadcasting and Media Technology. He is the current editor of Fort Hare Papers, the multidisciplinary journal of the University of Fort Hare.

Prior to his coming into the academia, he had worked as a journalist with various newspapers and magazines in Nigeria.
