Position overview
Business Day is looking for a fast-news editor covering primarily companies and markets news on a 6am-2pm shift for BusinessLIVE, our digital business platform. We’re seeking an applicant with news-editing and writing skills who has a nose for news and a good sense of what our digital readers want to see in the peak-traffic morning hours. Applicants should have a demonstrated knowledge of business and finance and be able to quickly copy-taste, edit, write and publish relevant and informed articles. The position also involves commissioning and liaising with reporters. The successful candidate should be an active participant on social media, or at least demonstrate a working knowledge of digital platforms.
Main responsibilities and outcomes
- Produce quick, short, well-written, relevant, accurate and balanced news stories;
- Liaise with other section editors and reporters regarding stories that require following up during the course of the day;
- Work to established style;
- Ensure delivery of high quality stories with immediacy;
- Resourcefulness, attention to detail and the ability to file with speed, accuracy and clarity;
- Proven ability to write clearly and authoritatively; and
- Receptiveness to feedback and openness to change.
Personal skills and attributes
- Be self-motivated with an ability to work within a team.
Minimum qualifications and requirements
- Relevant diploma/degree;
- At least five years’ experience in journalism;
- A demonstrated knowledge of finance and business;
- Excellent news-gathering, research and writing skills;
- Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Unimpeachable integrity; and

Senior production journalist
Reporting to: Digital editor

Position overview
Business Day has a vacancy for the position of a senior digital production journalist. The ideal candidate will be someone proficient in copy-editing and/or sub-editing who is keen to apply their skills in a demanding digital publishing environment. This position carries through the production process all the way from copy-editing to digital publication and promotion. The successful candidate will execute layout and/or copy editing and, where necessary, digital production for Business Day and its streams.
Main responsibilities and outcomes
- Producing a high-quality and error-free digital product
- Editing, selecting images and other media, writing headlines all to a high standard and in line with the product’s voice and strategy
- Editing for style, fairness and potential legal issues
- Generating original content when required
- Fine attention to detail
- A high level of literacy and the ability to edit text, write web-appropriate headlines and package different types of media in a sensible and useful way;
- The ability to engage other members of the newsroom
- A willingness to learn
- A good understanding of business and economic terms and concepts
Skills requirements
The successful candidate must have an editorial background and proven skill in writing and editing in English. He or she will be able to work under pressure and on deadline. Knowledge of print and digital publishing systems is also required.
