AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
Based in Johannesburg or Nairobi, the Audience Development Manager will report to the Editor and will develop and implement outreach strategies to build sustainable traffic to The Conversation Africa’s website and increase overall readership through our Creative Commons model.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES |
OUTPUT 1: Social media / Audience Development |
- Working with the Editor and General Manager to develop and maintain an audience development plan for The Conversation Africa
- Promote TC articles on social media including Facebook and Twitter, developing new tactics and strategies to enhance our brand
- Edit and post daily social media to support editorial output, including Facebook and Twitter
- Monitoring and measure audience development and social media activities across all editorial sections
- Support editorial development by mining search results and generating regular reports to inform editors of leading search terms and communities
- Continuously work on growing the newsletter distribution, and monitor opening levels and dormancy rates.
- Experiment with other social media channels (Instagram, Snapchatt, Reddit) towards growing readership and brand awareness
- Experiment with new tools and features such as video content and Facebook Live
- Work with universities to coordinate audience development opportunities (social media coordination, republishing efforts, etc.)

OUTPUT 2: Republication |
- With inputs from editors in Johannesburg, Nairobi and Lagos establish and maintain relationships with media outlets across the continent to partner with them for republication
- Work with editors in Johannesburg, Nairobi and Lagos to promote and pitch specific stories to media and develop productive relationships with websites and media outlets
- Develop repeatable processes to distribute content to high-traffic sites
- Develop and maintain content syndication partnerships, including development and building of databases of continent wide media titles and publishing houses
- Monitor and implement tracking processes and systems and engage with relevant contacts to ensure content partners and other republishers comply with republishing guidelines

OUTPUT 3: Reporting |
- Attend all editorial planning meetings
- Analyse traffic and data, providing reports to stakeholders as appropriate
- Report weekly to editorial team on latest metrics

QUALIFATIONS AND EXPERIENCE |
- Plugged-in social media native who is excited about emojis, memes and internet culture
- Excellent familiarity with social media publishing tools
- Strong regional media contacts
- Editorial judgement
- Three to five years experience in online media including social media, preferably in an editorial environment
- A relevant qualification (digital marketing, online media, communications or other relevant field)
- Knowledge of special-interest or niche markets in a multi-platform media company, content distribution and partnership development
- Excellent presentation and communication skills
- The ability to produce high-quality written material in English.
- Good sense of the news and strong grasp of audiences
- Excellent attention to detail
- Proven ability to produce social media output.
- Time-management and organizational skills
- Flexibility and the ability to act quickly in a dynamic and fast-moving organisation
- Creativity to communicate in different ways
- Excellent interpersonal skills
