Rhodes University’s Sol Plaatje Institute (SPI) for Media Leadership, Africa’s only university-level media management and leadership institute, offers a five-day media management course for communication and other front-line-facing officers in central government, local government and municipalities, including those who are in their mid-careers.

This short course is fully certificated and accredited on the National Qualifications Framework Level 6. The course, known as Government Media: Essential Tools for Editors & Journalists, will run at the SPI on the following dates: 14-18 March 2016, 18- 22 July, 21-25 November 2016.

It focuses on the following key areas:

  • Handling of Media and External Relations
  • Handling of Campaigns
  • Editorial Independence and Journalistic Ethics
  • Reporting for Government Media -Leadership and Management

Sessions are led by industry and academic experts. We do offer the option of running the course in-house at your organisation, which would eliminate the cost of travel and accommodation for participants.

Please note that an in-house course will only take place if there are 16 or more participants attending the course. The course is for anyone who handles communication in central government, local government and municipalities and regularly interacts with the public.

Our courses emphasize interactive learning and knowledge-sharing, especially learning by doing, and represent a very useful platform to network with fellow communication managers and officers from across South Africa.
