Media freedom is constitutionally protected in South Africa. However it has become clear that attacks on media freedom are increasing. Over the past few years, the Freedom of Expression institute (FXI) has charted a trend of increasing censorship of the media and individual journalists. This censorship is not only directly applied through laws and lawsuits, but also indirectly, through withdrawal of advertising and self-censorship.This resource will equip small community newspapers with the knowledge, skills and resources to fend off these threats to their freedom to publish or their very existence.
