The media are too quick to assume race is a factor in events they cover, writes Luke Alfred in the Sunday Times. In one prime example, newspapers have been quick to lable the contractual dispute between the new Bok coach Peter de Villiers and the SA Rugby union as a race row.

In fact, it's simply a dispute about the terms of a contract. And there are other examples. Why is it that the r-word is so eagerly inserted into copy even when the justification is so flimsy? "The media are happy to stoke racial fires," he writes.
