CNBC is giving a new, serious face to business television,
writes Rob Rose in his Business Day column, The Bottom Line. And it’s likely to give Johncom's Summit TV a run for
its money.  But its launch displayed an
uncomfortable closeness with politicians.
Rose writes that the invitations for the launch were “curiously
delivered as invites ‘from the Presidency and CNBC Africa’.† And there were reports – denied by the channel
– that the Gauteng government of Mbhazima Shilowa had agreed to a sweetheart
advertising deal reminiscent of the apartheid government’s funding of The
Citizen.
