Main purpose of the job
To grow News24’s audience by informing, educating and delighting our readers with the right mix of content that is published on our digital platforms during the day.

Job Outputs
  • The Day Editor manages production and publishing of content during the day and will ensure that fresh and accurate content is published and ranked appropriately for maximum impact.
  • Liaising closely with the editor-in-chief, the heads of news and the associate editor about the tone and content mix of News24.
  • Update the home stream throughout the day (breaking news immediately and updating throughout), taking into consideration offerings from our other verticals.
  • Ensure that spelling and grammatical errors are kept to a minimum and that the team writes stellar headlines that attract the biggest possible audience.
  • Prioritise breaking news in conjunction with the assistant editor: breaking news to entrench our brand promise of ‘breaking news first’.
  • Administer shift rosters and the staffing of weekend shifts.
  • Ensure that traffic and audience targets are consistently met. 
  • Obsessively analyse traffic to our site and reader behavior to improve and grow our content offering and distribution.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent digital skills and experience with a passion for innovation
  • Excellent analytical skills and passionate about the use of data in journalism
  • Problem-solving, can-do attitude 
Qualifications and experience
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in journalism, languages or media studies; 
  • At least 10 years’ editorial experience; 
  • Previous experience in online editing. 
  • A sound editorial knowledge, including proficiency as a writer with strong editing skills; 
  • In-depth knowledge of the target market; 
  • Proficiency in relevant content management programs and analytical tools
