The Oxpeckers Centre for Investigative Environmental Journalism is looking for an intern for its award-winning and internationally recognised #MineAlert project. The intern will work remotely and will undergo a 30-day probation period before signing a contract. Preference will be given to a self-motivated, tech-savvy graduate with journalism experience.

 

About Oxpeckers:

Oxpeckers is Africa’s first journalistic investigation unit focusing on environmental issues. The Center combines traditional investigative reporting with data analysis and geo-mapping tools to expose eco-offences. Oxpeckers is a non-profit company that aims to dramatically improve the quality and impact of African environmental journalism.

 

About #MineAlert:

#MineAlert is a digital tool that allows users to access, track and share mining-related information. It is home to almost 4,000 data points across the country and hosts hundreds of mining-related documents, such as mining rights and water use licences, downloadable at just a click.

 

Your role:

Filing weekly data requests to appropriate agencies

Training communities + stakeholders to use and share the tool

Contributing to journalistic investigations

Compiling blogs

Managing social media platforms on a daily basis

Crowdsourcing information

Weekly updating of map data and document repositories

Taking part in and doing presentations at stakeholder meetings

Developing new relationships while maintaining current working relationships

Identifying collaboration opportunities

Compiling quarterly feedback statistics and reports

 

Our ideal person will have:

  • Journalism experience
  • Environment-related degree or experience
  • An understanding of technology, data and geospatial disciplines
  • Good research, writing and communication skills
  • The ability to innovate and problem solve
  • A disciplined, professional and independent personality
  • A driver’s licence, and preferably own transport
  • The freedom to travel on assignment
  • A laptop and cellphone
  • Previous experience
  • Fluency in English and at least one Nguni language
