The Conversation is a news website that provides an independent source of news and views obtained exclusively from the academic and research community and delivered direct to the public. The Africa edition is looking for a seasoned copy editor on a part time basis.
Responsibilities would include:
- Working with individual section editors to perfect articles they have commissioned from academics to ensure that the copy reads well, makes sense and can easily be understood by a lay audience.
- Doing the final check on articles before publication to ensure they are word perfect and that all references are in place and working.
Working hours: 20 hours a week. These would be flexible but would need to fit the site’s schedule of publishing up to 7 stories a day. These are loaded onto the site at 7am.
Requirements
We are looking for someone who has had at least 10 years experience in preparing articles for publication. The skills required include being able to interrogate articles and being able to do the necessary editing.
Editing could be done offsite although it would be necessary to spend an initial period with the team in Johannesburg to learn the editing system and the rhythm of the site.
Suitable applicants should send their CVs to Alex Storey at alexandra.storey@theconversation.com by Monday 25 January.
