Journalist and political commentator Jacob Dlamini and well-known
publisher Maggie Davey have been appointed as the 2009 Ruth First
Fellows in the Wits Journalism Programme.

Dlamini, a Wits graduate, now a PhD student at Yale University and a regular newspaper columnist, will be researching “Roots, Branches and Politics: An in-depth look at ANC branch politics”. Davey, currently publisher at Jacana Media, will be researching what has prevented the publication over many years of details of the assassination of ANC representative Dulcie September in Paris in 1988. They will both present the results of their research at the Ruth First Lecture on August 17 this year.

The event marks the assassination of writer and activist Ruth First in Maputo in 1987. The fellowship encourages work in the independent, in-depth and engaged tradition of Ruth First. Previous fellows include Pregs Govender, Henk Roussouw, Leonie Joubert, Pumla Qola, Santu Mofokeng and Alon Skuy.
