The Wits Journalism Programme is a post-graduate programme only. If you wish to become a journalist, we recommend that you:

  • Complete an undergraduate degree in any field of interest to you and of use to a future career in journalism (humanities, science, commerce, etc).
  • Get any practical working experience you can in the media, either by working in community or student media, freelancing or doing vacation work in a media institution.
  • Apply for our Honours course in your third year of study. Check the deadlines, but they are in August/September. To be considered for the course, you will need at least 65% average in an appropriate degree and you will have to pass an entry test and present yourself for an interview.  Media or writing experience is a strong recommendation. We accept a maximum of 20 students per year. Click here for details of this programme.
