Citation for the joint runner-up of the 2008/09 Taco Kuiper Awards:
City Press Hospital Tender
City Press stumbled across a corruption story in the tenders for a new Soweto hospital, and then pursued it all the way to its conclusion.
They had some luck in getting documentary evidence, but it was clear that these came their way because they were hammering away at the story, and showed a determination to get it all out in the open.
The story was presented in a graphic and effective way and we were particularly amused by the chutzpah of the Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works claiming the credit that was clearly due to the journalists.
It was again gratifying to see that the story led to action: in this case the cancellation of the tender.
