The African Investigative Journalism Conference is taking flight in 2026, heeding the call of the continent’s journalism community in making the event more accessible to those who travel from afar every year to the annual gathering in Johannesburg.
“Over 21 years of hosting the African Investigative Journalism Conference at Wits University, we have gathered an incredible community of investigative journalists from around the world, who have constantly asked us ‘please can you take this show on the road’. You asked, we are answering,” said director of the Wits Centre for Journalism Dr Dinesh Balliah in a dramatic reveal at the annual African Investigative Journalist of the Year Award gala evening on 6 November.
“We looked around carefully in choosing a long-standing and trusted partner, and we found that in Aga Khan University in Nairobi.”
Professor Nancy Booker, Dean of the Graduate School of Media and Communications at Aga Khan, joined #AIJC2025 to take the proverbial baton from Balliah in pledging their support to host the 2026 African Investigative Journalism Conference in Kenya from 10 to 12 November.
“This conference has become a home to Africa’s investigative journalism community. We are deeply honoured to accept this responsibility and carry this incredible legacy,” said Booker.
“To the Wits Centre for Journalism, we look forward to working closely with you to ensure this spirit lives on as we gather in Nairobi in 2026. We will try our best, and we thank you for entrusting us with the African Investigative Journalism Conference.”
