Job outline:
Tiso Blackstar’s digital business unit has a vacancy for the position of TimesLIVE story producer. This is a six-month contract position.
The ideal candidate will be someone proficient in sub-editing, copy-editing and/or writing who is keen to apply their skills in a demanding digital publishing environment. Please note this position will involve regular weekend, night and public holiday shifts.
Skills requirements:
The successful candidate must have an editorial background, an excellent news sense and proven skill in sub-editing and writing in English. He or she will be able to work under pressure and on deadline. Some knowledge of print and digital publishing systems, as well as practical experience using social media tools, is also required.
Job-specific requirements and attributes:
Importantly, a high level of literacy and the ability to sub-edit text to the point of perfection; writing eye-catching, web-appropriate headlines and social media posts to match; and packaging different types of media into single articles in a sensible and useful way.
The successful candidate will then also keep the TimesLIVE website (and its sub-sites) updated and fresh with content digitally optimised to attract an online reader – including generating original content at times. We require a good news sense; the ability to engage other members of the newsroom; a willingness to learn, with journalistic savvy and a sub-editor’s thoroughness; and availability to work flexible hours.
Candidates should also have:
A wide-ranging interest in current affairs; experience with live blogging, and a broad general knowledge. Some knowledge of media law would be beneficial.

Audio & podcast producer (contract)
Reporting to: Head of multimedia

Job outline:
We are looking for a multitalented audio producer to work in our multimedia team creating audio content – some original, some not – for Tiso Blackstar Group websites including TimesLIVE, BusinessLIVE and SowetanLIVE. The position is multifaceted and the candidate will be involved in all levels of the production process. The candidate must show passion for the medium.
Main responsibilities:
- Writing, producing, recording, editing and publishing audio content in a manner that is clear, engaging and meaningful to our audience.
- Writing short text articles to accompany audio and associated material.
- Repurposing audio from existing video content and publishing it across group titles.
- Recording, editing and creating audio files from all scheduled in-house podcasts.
- Assisting in the overall production of in-house podcasts, including organising people and interviews.
- Contributing to the development of new audio series for the group.
- Sourcing supplementary links, pictures, audio material and videos.
- Collaborating with the head of multimedia to fine-tune audio content.
- Regular diary co-ordination with group title editors.
- Keeping abreast of trends in podcasting.
- Weekend and after-hours work will be required at times.
Skills and attributes:
- Solid knowledge of the South African and global podcasting industry – but, most importantly, a passion for it and wanting to learn more.
- Good audio editing skills.
- Proficiency in Premiere Pro and related audio editing software.
- Good people skills and the ability to be patient and flexible in a busy newsroom.
- Excellent writing skills and command of the English language.
- Superior time management and communication skills.
- Confidence in coordinating, organising and conducting interviews.
Skills that would be an advantage:
- Multimedia, radio and/or TV experience.
- Experience in a digital role in a newsroom.
Qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree/diploma in journalism or a related field.
- Current driver’s licence.
