Three prison officers suspected of smuggling in investigative reporters
from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC)’s special
assignment programme into Beitbridge Prison have been arrested, writes Sandra Mandizvidza in Zimbabwe's Standard newspaper.
Thabiso Nyathi (35), Siyai Muchechedzi (35) and Thembinkosi Nkomo (28) were arrested in Gwanda, where they had gone for independence rehearsals.
A senior police officer at Beitbridge Police Station confirmed yesterday that the three were locked up in cells at the station.
“I can confirm that there are people who are being investigated by police from Gwanda regarding the SABC case. For more information, you contact Superintendent Chigona from Law and Order Section. He is the one who is doing the case,†he said.
The trio is being charged with breaching the Official Secrets Act.
The SABC recently screened a documentary exposing the sorry state of prisoners in the country’s filthy jails.
