Brief Description     
    Voice of Wits (VoW FM), a campus based community radio station at Wits University in Johannesburg seeks to employ a Programme Manager to perform the following functions:

Purpose of the position
Reporting to the Station Manager, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring the development, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of the station’s programming strategy. Further to this he/she will be responsible for the training and development of on-air talent.

Key Performance Areas for the position are as follow:

1.   Strategic planning  and management of programming
Develop, manage and continuously review the programming strategy of VoW, ensuring that this process is informed by the results of audience research, community forums, focus groups and legal requirements.

2. Management of programming resources
Manage, develop and grow the station’s on-air talent on a daily basis. In order to achieve this he/she must:

a. Be able to effectively direct, develop and grow the station’s on-air talent in order to achieve the station’s programming objectives. This includes regular performance assessment, feedback, training and guidance. 
b. Be aware of the on-air content and ensure that the overall output of the station is in line with the station’s strategic objectives. 
c. Ensure that the volunteers are able to work in an environment that enables them to perform their work at an optimal level (ie: adequate access to resources, equipment, training, etc). 
d. Work hand in hand with the technical manager, deputy station manager and station manager to ensure access to the appropriate resources, opportunities and training. 
e. Assess on an ongoing basis the quality and performance of the on-air talent and the overall impact on the station’s programming output.

3. Implementation, management and evaluation of programming strategy
Ensure the station’s programming strategy is implemented and executed correctly, making sure that there is an ongoing improvement of systems and strategies which would allow for the realization of the programming strategy. To address this, the following should be observed:

Skill/knowledge requirements: 
• Knowledge of broadcast rules, regulations and guidelines
• Knowledge of programming techniques, procedures and standards
• Excellent Communication skills (articulate, with knowledge and command of English and one other official language essential)
• Excellent people skills (ability to manage, facilitate, communicate and work with people from diverse backgrounds) 
• Excellent telephone manner (polite, courteous, articulate, helpful and alert)
• Strong leadership skills
• Diplomacy and patience 
• Ability to take initiative and work independently
• The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• Computer literacy (good knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and automation software). 
• Good active listener (able to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times).
• Time Management (Manage one’s own time and the time of others).
• Active Learning (Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making).
• Writing (Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience).

Education/qualifications
A Bachelors degree with at least two (2) year’s work experience in broadcast media. Previous management experience is an added advantage.
