The Wits Centre for Journalism recently welcomed Dan Corder to facilitate a hands-on content creation workshop designed for Wits students across all faculties.
The first cohort included Witsies studying a wide range of disciplines – from humanities, law and business, to education and accounting – who won their place by pitching a compelling story about Johannesburg which they’ll develop in the coming weeks.
“Research tells us that one in four South Africans get their news from people other than journalists or traditional news media,” says WCJ lecturer Pheladi Sethusa. “As a centre for journalism, we are intrigued by who those news creators are, and how they do what they do.
“This workshop was an opportunity to experiment with new storytelling techniques and methods with an adept facilitator thriving in the local creator ecosystem. By opening it up to the entire Wits University student base, we were attempting to capture students who wouldn’t traditionally think of themselves as storytellers, or study in a field where they don’t get to flex those storytelling muscles.”
