In My Culture project seeks to break language barriers in climate action
With climate change literature predominantly in English, millions of people miss crucial environmental insights around the world. The Wits Centre for Journalism has launched a groundbreaking initiative called Climate: In My Culture, in collaboration with climateXchange (cXc), that aims to create an evolving online platform to collect words and stories related to local understandings of climate change.
By empowering communities to share their climate experiences in their own words, we aim to bridge the knowledge gap and make climate change accessible to as many cultures and communities as possible.
While the intiative is still in its infancy, together with cXc the Centre hopes to expand its reach via international gatherings in the media space, and report on climate experiences in local languages. The first recordings took place at the 20th African Investigative Journalism Conference at Wits University.
